This beautiful print is noted to be the first print of five exclusive releases of this amazing black and white print from 1988. Comprised of a gelatin silver material, this photograph print exemplifies the distinctive and bold artwork of the Mapplethorpes.
Born and raised in New York, Edward Mapplethorpe began his artistic career under the pseudonym “Edward Maxey”, and quickly became acclaimed for his luminous nudes, portraits, and still lives that were evocative of his renowned older brother, Robert Mapplethorpe (1946–1989). However, it was Edward’s innovative work beyond the typical studio environment (Undercurrents, 1992-94) that first distinguished him as a unique talent in bridging the gap between photography and abstract painting.
This particular piece is a rare, inspiring piece that is a must-have for art collectors given the storied history of the brothers and their resurfaced relevance due to the 2018 film “Mapplethorpe”.
